It is the standard of care for patients who have Diabetes (type 1 or type 2) to have a dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Diabetes can cause changes to the eyes and vision in several ways:

  • Fluctuations in your vision

  • Changes to your glasses prescription

  • Earlier cataracts

  • Bleeding, swelling, and scarring of the retina, which can cause irreversible vision changes/loss

  • Higher risk for developing glaucoma

After your comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will send a letter to your PCP to let them know we checked your eyes and vision for any changes associated with diabetes.
